Looking down the aisle of a bookstore in Wichita, KS

Although modern technology has invaded most aspects of our lives, there’s still something magically unique about reading a book. Few things are more relaxing than immersing yourself in a book’s story and letting your imagination recreate all the scenes and characters. Here are the best places in Wichita, Kansas, to find great books.

Book-A-Holic Bookstore

This special place is owned by local David Lovett and his wife Maria. It started back in 1993 after the couple closed a failed mail order venture. Having amassed over 5,000 books, they quickly adapted and started what is now the largest used book store in all of Kansas. Over the years, the business kept growing, and they now have three locations, in the Parklane, Plaza West, and Tyler Crossing shopping centers. Visitors can even bring their own used books, DVDs, or music albums and sell them to other bookstore buyers.

Al’s Old and New Book Store

This charming bookstore was based in Delano for 40 years before moving to downtown Wichita five years ago. The over 2,000 square feet of space is host to more than 40,000 books, with a broad variety of themes and topics that range from local, American, and world history to science, art, engineering, and an excellent variety of fiction. They also stock up on old and out-of-print books, and they offer their customers a special search service if the title they want is not currently in the bookstore’s stock.

Blue Baboon Books

While books should be a big part of any adult’s life, getting children and young adults to read is even more important. This was the reasoning behind Blue Baboon Books, Wichita’s only bookstore that only has juvenile literature. They also understand that in order to get kids to be passionate about books, you need to create the right environment. They regularly host all sorts of events, from story times and crafting events to birthday parties and baby showers, offering the kids plenty of opportunities to have fun and build a lifelong passion for books.

Watermark Books and Café

The idea of a bookstore where you can meet friends and have fun in a cozy atmosphere not only appeals to kids, but also to adults. This was the idea behind Watermark Books and Café, a place where you can find great books and also spend hours chatting with friends over a meal or a cup of coffee. Aside from a huge variety of books, they also sell their own clothes and merchandise, branded with the Watermark name and the Wichita flag. This is one of the best places for book lovers to meet and chat in all of Kansas.

Although nowadays there are a million things around us competing for our time and attention, the old fashioned book still appeals to so many people, regardless of their age. By visiting any of these places, you’ll not only get the chance to feed your passion for reading good books, but also meet like-minded people and make wonderful memories.
